Greenworks 60V vs 80V — Battery and Trimmer Spool Compatibility Explained

Greenworks offers outdoor power equipment in two high-voltage platforms — 60V and 80V. Both are aimed at homeowners who want gas-equivalent performance from a battery tool, and the tools look similar at a glance. But the two platforms are not interchangeable, and mixing parts between them can lead to wasted money and incompatible purchases.

Here is a clear breakdown of what crosses over and what does not.

The critical rule: 60V and 80V batteries are NOT compatible

This is the most important thing to understand before buying any Greenworks parts:

  • 60V batteries do NOT fit 80V tools. The battery interface is physically different. A 60V pack will not slide into an 80V tool.
  • 80V batteries do NOT fit 60V tools. Same story in reverse. The connections are designed to prevent cross-insertion.
  • There is no adapter or workaround. These are separate voltage platforms with separate battery designs.

If you own both 60V and 80V Greenworks tools, you need separate battery inventories for each. This is different from brands like DeWalt (where FLEXVOLT 60V batteries work in 20V tools) or Atlas (where 80V packs work in 40V tools). Greenworks keeps its voltage platforms completely isolated.

Trimmer spool differences between platforms

Greenworks string trimmers are available in both 60V and 80V configurations. While the trimmers may look similar, the spool and trimmer head details can differ:

60V Greenworks trimmers

  • Typically use a bump-feed or auto-feed head with pre-wound spools
  • Standard line diameter is usually 0.080” (verify with your specific model)
  • Spool housing dimensions are specific to the 60V trimmer head design
  • Replacement spools must match the 60V trimmer head — do not assume an 80V spool will fit

80V Greenworks trimmers

  • Also use bump-feed heads, but the head design may differ from the 60V version
  • May support 0.080” or 0.095” line depending on the model
  • Spool housing dimensions may be different from the 60V trimmers
  • Check your 80V trimmer model number before ordering spools

Can spools cross between platforms?

In some cases, Greenworks may use the same trimmer head design across both voltage platforms — but this is not guaranteed. The trimmer head is a separate component from the motor and battery, so it is physically possible for two trimmers on different voltage platforms to use the same head. However:

  • Always verify by matching the spool to your specific model number
  • Do not rely on visual similarity — spool housings that look alike can have different tab positions, spring posts, or inner diameters
  • If you own both 60V and 80V trimmers, test-fit a spool from one in the other before buying in bulk

Trimmer line compatibility

The good news about trimmer line (sold in bulk spools by diameter) is that it is universal:

  • 0.080” line works in any trimmer head designed for 0.080”, regardless of brand or voltage
  • 0.095” line works in any head designed for 0.095”
  • Line does not care about voltage — it is just nylon or composite material wound onto a spool

If you buy bulk trimmer line and wind your own spools, the same spool of line works across both platforms (assuming both heads accept the same diameter). The limitation is only with pre-wound, brand-specific spools that must match the head housing.

Other parts that do NOT cross between platforms

Beyond batteries and potentially trimmer spools, other platform-specific parts include:

  • Chargers — 60V chargers charge 60V batteries only. 80V chargers charge 80V batteries only. Some Greenworks chargers are dual-voltage — check the label before assuming.
  • Mower blades — If you own both 60V and 80V mowers, the blade specs (length, center hole, bolt pattern) may differ between models.
  • Chainsaw chains and bars — These depend on the specific saw model, not the voltage. Match by pitch, gauge, and drive link count.

Greenworks as Kobalt OEM: a note

Greenworks has taken over as the manufacturer for Kobalt-branded outdoor power tools sold at Lowe’s, replacing Chervon. If you are shopping for Kobalt tools going forward, the underlying technology will be Greenworks-based. However, Kobalt-branded batteries and parts may use yet another interface — do not assume Greenworks-branded and Kobalt-branded parts are interchangeable without verification.

What this means for replacement parts

The Greenworks 60V and 80V platforms are completely separate battery systems. Trimmer spools may or may not cross between platforms depending on the specific head design. Always order parts by your exact Greenworks model number to ensure compatibility. Browse our catalog for Greenworks trimmer spools and replacement line matched to specific 60V and 80V models.
